The Festus eighth grade girls basketball team used a big first quarter surge to set the tempo of Monday’s road game at Crystal City. The Tigers outscored the Hornets 16-2 in that quarter en route to an easy 33-8 victory.
The offensive attack was great in that first quarter, but Festus coupled that with a stifling defense. The Hornets only managed two points in that first quarter, and then were shut out in the second, allowing the Tigers to lead 21-2 at halftime.
“We started the game in a strong way, especially coming back from the Christmas break,” said head coach Shannon Richeson. “The girls played good defense, and our first and third quarters were strong offensively.”
Festus came back with 12 points in the third quarter, and again, only allowed two points.
Jessica Hebenstreit led the way for the Tigers with 22 points. Lily Brickhaus scored five points, while Shelbi Ortmann, Hannah Warfel and Morgan Green chipped in with two points apiece.
Festus, now 3-3 on the season, is back home on Thursday taking on the Perryville Pirates. Tip off is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.
