The Festus varsity baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of its game at Affton on Thursday en route to a five-inning 14-0 victory. The win improves the Tigers’ record to 8-7 on the season.
Matt Rosen (11) went a perfect four-for-four on the day with a double and a triple. He also scored three runs and drove home two. “Matt Rosen was about as good as a hitter can be offensively in this game,” said head coach Jeff Montgomery.
But Rosen wasn’t the only one with notable numbers from this game. Collin Mann (11) had two hits and two RBI, while Elijah Richeson (12) did the same. He also stole a base and scored a run. Cameron Beck (12) collected one hit, one RBI, one stolen base, two walks and scored three runs. Jake Leitner (11) also had a hit and a stolen base, while Logan Uding (11) had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Kevin Link (12) collected two RBI, and Brennan Pryor (11) had one.
“We really needed this win,” said Montgomery. “We barreled the baseball on the ground or on a line through the infield a lot today, and that really helped.”
The defense was solid as Montgomery pointed out outstanding play from Link at first base, and Abe Kraus (12) at third. Add to that a strong pitching performance by Andrew Douglas (12) and the game couldn’t have progressed better for the Tigers. Douglas pitched five shutout innings allowing only three hits and striking out two.
“Douglas pitched well, and we kept his pitch count down which was the plan this week,” said Montgomery.
The Tigers will return to the diamond on Tuesday at West City Park. The opponent will be St. Charles West and the game has been designated “Youth Baseball Night.” First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
