The Festus freshman football team continued its unbeaten streak with a 40-15 victory over St. Francis Borgia Monday evening at Festus Stadium.
The Tigers opened the scoring with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter on a 40 yard touchdown pass connection between quarterback Collin Doyel and receiver Cayse Martin. Cayden Glaze added the extra point to make it 7-0.
It wasn’t long before Festus scored again, this time with 2:32 remaining in the opening quarter. Cole Wagner carried the ball into the end zone from four yards out. With Glaze’s extra point, the Tigers were up 14 after the first quarter.
Borgia cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:29 to go in the second quarter on a nine yard pass play, but the Tigers countered quickly. Doyel hit Wagner from 15 yards out with 4:16 left in the half. The conversion failed, but Festus was up 20-7 at halftime.
The Tigers ran away with the game in the third quarter. Glaze recovered a fumble and returned it 81 yards for a touchdown, and Wagner scored a rushing touchdown from 15 yards out to give Festus a 32-7 lead.
The final score for the Tigers came with 6:21 to go in the fourth quarter when Austin Anderson scored from two yards out. Doyel ran in the conversion for a 40-7 lead. The Knights added a touchdown late in the game.
Festus will play its final game of the season next Monday at Poplar Bluff High School. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
