The Festus varsity soccer team couldn’t have asked for a better way for “Senior Night” to go as the Tigers routed St. Paul Lutheran 10-0 Tuesday at Festus Stadium.
“It was an emotional, yet rewarding feeling for us,” said head coach Austin Burgert. “These seniors had never won by that large of a margin, and some of the guys got their first goal on their senior night.”
Seven different Tigers scored. Willie Wiesollek (12) got Festus on the board first with a goal at the 37:57 mark of the game. He would later score another goal in the second half and add an assist. He was one of three Tigers who had multiple goals. Shumpei Ishigaki (12) scored in both halves and also had two assists. The other multiple goal scorer was Alec Bell (9) who also scored in both halves and added two assists.
Seniors Shandon Riney, Tim Uskiwich, and Chance Gotsch also hit the back of the net for Festus. Uskiwich and Gotsch also collected assists. The other goal scorer was Vincent Mueller (9) who scored the second goal of the game.
Zach Bradshaw (12) and Michael Smith (12) also got into the box score with one assist each. Jack Uskiwich (9) wasn’t tested much, but came away with the shutout in goal.
The Tigers had a 4-0 lead at halftime.
“We spent a lot of the game on the offensive third of the field,” said Burgert. “It was great that so many of our seniors got involved…we played well collectively across the field.”
Burgert couldn’t help but heap praise on the seniors. “I can’t say enough good things about what this team has done, and especially our seniors. They have endured some of the program’s most difficult seasons, yet they are still here battling it out. It says a lot about these guys and this program that we have players that love this game and have enough respect for it that they are still willing to lay it on the line facing such adversity. Words can’t describe how proud I am of this team, and our guys top to bottom, for their hard work and dedication.
The season continues today with a game at Winfield. Kickoff for the 5-15 Tigers is at 4:30 p.m.
