The Festus varsity boys soccer team saw some opportunities slip away as they dropped a 3-2 decision at Winfield Wednesday. The Tigers stand at 5-16 with one regular season game remaining.
The game was scoreless through the first half until the Warriors scored three goals in the final twelve minutes of the half. “We started the game very strong and had a couple of really great opportunities to put the game away early,” said head coach Austin Burgert. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t make that happen, and as the first half came to a close, we lost our focus and Winfield took advantage of it.”
The second half was much like the first, but the Tigers were putting more pressure in the offensive half of the field. Finally, with 1:22 to go in the game, Alec Bell (9) scored to make it 3-1. Then, with only nine seconds remaining, Shumpei Ishigaki (12) scored to make it 3-2. Willie Wiesollek (12) assisted on both goals. There just wasn’t enough time remaining for the Tigers to complete the comeback.
“In the second half, we regained our focus, and I really like the way we finished the game,” said Burgert. “We just had some unlucky bounces, and it cost us the ballgame, but Alec and Shumpei have been working great together from midfield to the top.”
So there is just one game remaining on the regular season schedule, a match at Sikeston on Tuesday. Kick off for that game is at 5 p.m. Then the district tournament begins. This fall, it will be held at Hillsboro High School, and the Tigers have drawn the host school. For the complete bracket, please follow this link: District Soccer Tournament
