The Festus varsity girls basketball team got scoring from only four players Thursday night at Perryville, but still managed a 55-39 victory that assured the team of at least a share of the conference title. The Tigers are 10-8 on the season, and 3-0 in conference play with one game to go.
Festus was without Abby McMillin (10) who had the flu. Jess Hebenstreit (9) rolled an ankle in the second quarter, and Jenna Oetting (11) has had a bout with strep throat.
That put a lot of pressure on the remaining players, and they came up big. Bria Garmon (10) scored 18 points and drained four three-pointers. She also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Abby Rickermann (10) pulled off a “double-double”, scoring 18 points as well, and leading the team with 11 rebounds. She made five three pointers on the night. Oetting, despite not being 100 percent, managed to score 11 points and collect seven steals for the game. Maddie Welsh (11) knocked down eight points, while Allison Kuykendall (11) pulled down six rebounds, all on the offensive side of the ball.
“It was a great win,” said head coach Ron Rhodes. “I am super proud of this group of ladies. They keep digging down and finding ways to win. It was a great gut check victory.”
The Tigers struggled offensively in the first half, up only 18-13 at halftime. But the team settled down in the second half and managed to distance themselves from the Pirates.
The Tigers are now just one conference victory away from the JCAA large school crown. A win Monday at DeSoto would give Festus a perfect 4-0 conference record. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
