The Festus junior varsity girls basketball squad has had to overcome the same obstacle in recent games…a lack of offensive punch. It reared its ugly head again Monday, as the Tigers fell to North County 39-17. The 17 points scored was the lowest total since January 4th, when the team scored 16 against Seckman.
But the game started on a high note, as the Tigers took an 8-6 lead after one quarter. Ashley Wood (10) scored six points in the opening period to give the Tigers the edge. However, a 12-4 scoring deficit in the second quarter put the home team down 18-12 at halftime. From that point on, the Tigers would score only five more points the rest of the way.
Wood led Festus in scoring with nine points. Jess Hebenstreit (9) and Hannah Warfel (9) collected three points apiece, while Shelbi Ortmann (9) closed out the scoring with two points.
Festus will look to rebound on Thursday, taking on Ste. Genevieve on the road at 6:00 p.m.
