The Festus junior varsity baseball team didn’t find a lot of success in two games early this week. The Tigers lost to Lafayette at West City Park on Monday, 16-5. Then Tuesday, DeSoto got the best of Festus 14-4.
Monday, Festus took a brief 3-2 lead after one inning, and showed some fight in the second, scoring a couple runs after giving up seven in the second. But that’s all the offense the Tigers could muster.
“We weren’t able to throw strikes in the beginning of the game, which led to a lot of runs for Lafayette,” said head coach Adam Whitehead. “We also made some timely errors that kept innings going. We did do a good job at the plate, making their pitchers work.”
Cayse Martin (9) tripled and drove home two runs in the second. Connor Wilkerson (10), Jacob Folk (9), and Nolan Stafford (10) also had RBIs.
Against DeSoto on Tuesday, Festus dug a deep hole, falling behind 9-0 after two innings. Despite the loss, Whitehead saw positives. “We can build on our at bats. We continue to get on base pretty consistently. We still have a lot to work on and improve, but hopefully we can use these quality at bats to stay confident.”
Aidan Irelan (9) and Cole Wagner (9) drove in runs for the Tigers, while Martin collected two hits.
The Tigers host the Perryville Pirates Thursday at West City Park. First pitch is 4:30 p.m.
