The Festus Girls Track team traveled to Central High School in Park Hills Saturday for the Class 4 District 1 Track Meet. The Tigers finished 4th place in the team standings, while 10 events met the standard to advance to the Sectional Meet by finishing in the top four.
Junior Alexa Sumpter was only event champion for Festus. Her 115 foot throw in the wet conditions allowed for her to accomplish her goal of being the district champion. More importantly, it allowed for her to overcome the adversity from last season’s district meet and build a lot of confidence heading into the next round of the state series. Alexa will also be competing in the shot put at the Sectional meet after finishing second in the event.
This season’s field event success was again on display in Saturday’s jumping events. Junior Abby McMillin continued her remarkable season with top-4 finishes in all three jumping events. McMillin was 2nd place in the long jump, 2nd in the triple jump, and finished 3rd in the high jump. Ava McKinney joined McMillin on the score sheet in the Long Jump. While Ava’s 7th place finish did not qualify her for advancement, it was the conclusion of a great first season with the program.
Freshman sprinter Kinsey Benack’s impressive season continued Saturday morning with what turned into a very busy day for her. She began the morning, qualifying for the 100m finals where she ultimately finished 2nd place overall. Kinsey would later anchor the Festus 4x100m relay team that would also finish second place and advance to the Sectional race. Benack was joined by Bria Garmon, Jenna Oetting, and Abby Rickermann to take the first step in a season-long goal for the relay team. Benack’s 5th place finish in the triple jump did not qualify her for Sectionals, but in only her 5th time competing in the event she has established herself as a serious threat in the event next season.
After a number of delays, the Tiger Pole Vaulters finally had the opportunity to compete late Saturday Night. The poor conditions forced the event to start shortly after 7 pm. The long delay could have disrupted the day for some, but both Festus vaulters would not be deterred. Junior Abby Williams capitalized on the opportunity to jump by establishing a new PR and securing a second place finish. Williams jump is currenlty the #3 jump in Festus history. Senior Kaite Prater also established a new PR with her 8 foot clearance, which was good for 8th place.
The Festus Tigers distance team faced tremendous competition with the re-aligned district. Saturday’s results show the Tigers were up to the challenge. The 4x800m relay team of Maddie Welsh, Melissa Wolk, Demi White, and Sophia Leftwich will be advancing after their third place finish. Freshman Allison Faerber, in her lone event of the day, finished 2nd place in the 3200m run with a new PR of 11:42.
Festus will compete at the Class 4 Sectional 1 meet this Saturday at West Plains High School. The top finishers from the Sectional race will then have the chance to compete at the MSHSAA State Meet on May 24-25.
