Festus hosted the annual TigerTown Invitational yesterday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. The Festus girls track team took full advantage of the tremendous weather, outpacing 14 other schools for the team title. The prime conditions also set the table for some outstanding performances.
The depth of this year’s team was on full display with an excellent mix of performances in the relays. All four Tiger relay teams secured top six finishes and established new season’s best in the events. The 4x800m relay team of Sophia Leftwich, Maddie Welsh, Bailey Moore, and Demi White opened the scoring efforts with a fourth place finish. Lydia Henderson, Bria Garmon, Jenna Oetting, and Abby McMillin finished fifth place in a competitive 4x200m field. Freshman Kinsey Benack joined Henderson, Garmon, and Oetting for a second place effort in the 4x100m relay. The 4x400m relay completed the scoring for the Tigers with a sixth place finish. Relay members were Garmon, Welsh, Abby Rickermann, and Tristan Foulk.
As usual, the distance team provided a healthy portion of the scoring efforts. Allison Faerber led the Tigers with a fourth place finish in the 1600m and ended her night finishing second place in the 3200m run. Senior Melissa Wolk finished sixth and fourth competing in the same two events. Maddie Welsh’s third place effort in the 800m rounded out the scoring in the distance events for Festus.
The field events continue to improve as the season progresses. Abby McMillin has consistently led the Festus jumpers and she continued that trend Tuesday night. McMillin was the triple jump champion, but also finished second in the long jump and third in the high jump. Abby Rickermann and Kinsey Benack joined McMillin on the score sheet with personal record performances. Rickermann finished seventh in the long jump (15-2), while Benack was second in the triple jump with a jump of nearly 34 feet. Junior teammates Abby Williams and Alexa Sumpter also established new personal records Tuesday night. Williams new mark in the pole vault (8-6) was good for third place, while Sumpter’s 120+ foot throw earned her the win in the discus event.
Tuesday evening also provided an opportunity to honor and recognize our six senior athletes. The soon-to-be graduates are Jenna Oetting, Melissa Wolk, Bailey Moore, Allison Payne, Kaite Prater, and Maddie Welsh. All six seniors have certainly impacted the Festus track program, but most importantly they all have left a tremendous mark at Festus High School.
The Festus track teams will be back in action Friday night at the DeSoto Invitational.
