The Tigers traveled to the Wood Bat Classic on Friday night at Wilson Rozier Field in Farmington. This is the 10th year the Tigers have competed at the Wood Bat Classic. Festus would draw Winfield and Farmington on Friday night for pool play action.
Festus would trail early against a scrappy Winfield team. Winfield got four in the first but the Tigers settled in and came back to win 7-6 by scoring 7 in the fifth inning. Festus got a gutty performance on the mound from Senior Ethan Carroll who tossed two scoreless frames and struck out three to keep the game in check. Junior Kaleb Kennedy relieved Carroll and was a key component in the win. Kennedy threw two scoreless frames and pitched out of a jam in the 7th inning. Kennedy snagged a hard hit ground ball and threw home to prevent a Winfield runner trying to score from third. Catcher Tyler Bizzle made the tag and kept the game 7-6. Kennedy struck out the final batter with the tying run on third for the win. It was a defensive gem for Kennedy and Bizzle to help the tigers win the game.
Offensively, a big seven run inning led by a solo shot by Junior Connor Hulsey who hammered his first home run over the fence to left field for a 5-1 game. Festus would load the bases with a big blow offensively coming off the bat of Sophomore Nate Moore. Moore would double to deep left center to clear the bases and drive in three. Junior Trent Ellis and Senior Collin Reando had also singled in the inning. Reando drove in Senior Cole Wagner for the fifth run.
Senior Collin Reando had a three hit game and drove in one. Sophomore Nate Moore had three rbis and a double. Junior Connnor Hulsey homered and singled for two hits. Ellis and Junior Cameron Ford picked up the other hits.
In the nightcap, The Tigers again saw themselves competing in a highly contested game and again had a solid performance on the mound. A combined effort from Sophomore Nate Moore and Junior Cameron Ford on the mound held down a solid Farmington team on Friday. Moore was the starter and allowed just two hits in four and 2/3 innings of work. Moore would strike out four. Junior Cameron Ford also struck out four and and kept the Tigers close til the end in two and 1/3 innings of work.
The pitching was excellent this weekend. The switch to wood bat creates some good baseball but also some challenges for hitters. The Tigers would see Farmington’s number one pitcher in J. Jarvis who would allow two hits and strike out 11 Tiger hitters.
Festus got hits from Junior Cameron Ford (double) and Senior Collin Reando in the game. Festus threatened and stranded two runners in the second inning and left the bases loaded in the third.
Festus brought a well played game in both contest. Good defense and excellent pitching on Friday for Festus. Festus would now prepare for Saturday’s contest.
