Three days after winning the Tigertown Invitational at home, the Festus Girls Track team traveled to DeSoto for their annual invitational. The Tigers split their squad for the second time this season to allow for increased participation. The two teams finished 5th and 12th respectfully.

The distance squad again provided numerous highlights. In the 1600m run, Maddie Welsh was the event champion with a career-best 5:30. Teammate Allison Faerber finished just behind Maddie, completing the 1-2 finish. Junior Sophia Leftwich (4th) joined Welsh (5th) for scoring performances in the 800m run, with Leftwich’s 2:34 establishing a new PR. In the 3200m run, Senior Melissa Wolk inched closer to breaking the 12:00 minute barrier, with a 4th place finish in 12:02, also a new PR.

Many Tiger sprinters had decreased workloads on Friday night, but the sprint relays continue to score points with great performances. Lydia Henderson, Blair Baumer, Natalie Mazur, and MyKaila Batee teamed up on both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays that finished 8th and 6th respectfully. The lone individual scoring performance came via Bria Garmon in the 400m run. Garmon was making her debut in the event and finished 5th place.

Junior Alexa Sumpter continues to lead the Festus Throws squad. Sumpter finished 2nd place in the discus and backed that up with a 4th place finish in the shot put. Sumpter was joined in the scoring efforts by freshman Taylor McMillin in the shot put. McMillin finished 8th place with a throw of 31-4, just 5 inches behind Sumpters 4th place throw of 31-9.

The jumping events saw many new faces get opportunities, though Juniors Abby McMillin and Abby Rickermann did still compete in their prefered events. McMillin finished in 2nd place in the High Jump, while Rickermann finished 6th place in the long jump. Freshman Kinsey Benack continues to give the Tigers consistent performances in the jumping events as well. Benack finished 6th in both the High Jump and Triple Jump, her only two events of the night.

The Tigers will be next be in action at the Hillsboro Junior Varsity Invitational on Wednesday afternoon. The Varsity team will spend the week preparing for the JCAA Conference meet that will be hosted at Hillsboro High School on April 24-25.
