The Festus Tigers hosted Perryville on Thursday and hoped to stay undefeated in conference play in 2019. The Home team sent Junior Connor Wilkinson to the mound. Festus would push the issue on the bases all night swiping 6 bases and combined with a solid effort on the mound by Wilkinson, Zach Baisch, and Collin Reando the Tigers get the win.

After a zero in the top of the first, Festus scored two in the bottom of the first inning. Cole Wagner, Charlie Pratt, and Eddie Martin all led off the game with singles. A walk to Zach Baisch and a fielder’s choice by Collin Reando, Festus had two runs on the board.

The Tigers scored in the third inning, Senior Eddie Martin doubled to lead off the inning and later an rbi single by Junior Connor Wilkinson. In the 5th again, Eddie Martin singled Zach Baisch singled and later in the inning Connor Wilkinson singled to produce a total of two runs in the inning. Festus then got another insurance run in the top of the sixth frame.. Cole Wagner singled to lead off the inning and was driven in later in the inning by Sophomore Catcher Collin Reando.

The home team grinded out at bats well all night and was able to get the lead off hitter on in 4 innings. All four of those innings the tigers scored. Festus stole 6 bases on the night. Zach Liles, Charlie Pratt, Collin Reando, Cole Wagner (2 bases), and Laine Axtetter all had steals on the night. This proved to create havoc for the visiting team and allow the Tigers to move up runners in key spots.

Offensively, the Tigers more than doubled the Pirates output at the plate. Festus collected 12 hits to Perryville’s 5 hits. Festus got multi hit nights from Cole Wagner (3 hits), Eddie Martin (3 hits), Connor Wilkinson (2 hits), and Charlie Pratt (2 hits). Cole Wagner and Eddie Martin led the way with two runs scored each. Zach Baisch and Collin Reando both had one hit tonight.

Connor Wilkinson started the game and went 4 and 1/3 innings on the mound. Wilkinson struck out 7 and pitched out of two jams. Zach Baisch pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out 3, he also pitched out of a jam and did not allow an earned run. Baisch was lifted with two outs in the 7th inning and Sophomore Collin Reando came in to get the last out. Reando earned a save for the performance. Festus continues to get good pitching and an improved defensive effort. This was the best offensive week of the season for the Tigers so far.

This head coach has been pleased with how this team has responded the past couple weeks. There is something unique about this squad. Every night, each inning, they come off the field with a positive energy. The seniors are vocal and positive. They don’t seem to allow mistakes or a bad inning to get them down. They say a little adversity just makes you stronger in life, well the tough road the Tigers faced early this year has made this group to want to fight even harder. They do handle adversity much better. After a win like this there isn’t much to say, just don’t be satisfied. Let’s keep working to get better.

This week the Tigers went 2-0 with wins over De Soto and Perryville. This weekend will be off for this baseball squad. This is prom weekend at FHS!

Everyone can still donate to our Mercy Jefferson Toy Drive, just bring small new toys to school tomorrow or early next week. We would like to get 50 toys! The toys are donated to Mercy for children in crisis that come in the hospital.

Last week the Tigers played just one game and the second game with Mehlville and the past weekend’s Coach Davenport Buechting Classic was rained out. This week the Tigers played just two games. This week we have two awards each for our Gritty Gutty and Eye of the Tiger Award.

Zach Baisch and Cole Wagner get the Gritty Gutty Award for the week for the Tigers. The Gritty Gutty award goes to a player that demonstrates toughness, hustle, determination, and just pure grit on the field wearing the Festus Tiger uniform. Both stepped up offensively, defensively and on the mound in some key spots the past two weeks.

The Eye of the Tiger Award goes to Eddie Martin and Ryan Reando this week. The Eye of the Tiger award goes to the player that proves to be valuable regarding leadership, character, and success on the field wearing the Festus Tiger uniform. Both student athletes had success on the field this week helping their team win games.
